Keep your decorations spooky and safe this Halloween!
It's always fun to turn your home into a haunted lair for a night, but don't let your Halloween spirit compromise the safety of your family or holiday guests. If you are going all out this year, keep these safety tips in mind as you decorate.
- Have an adult carve the pumpkin. While children can create a design and help scoop out of the seeds, they should not be allowed near the knives during the carving process.
- Practice fire safety. A flameless candle or glowstick are your best bets in a jack-o'-lantern, but if you insist on a real flame, keep it in a small dish and don't leave it unattended.
- Keep walking paths lit. Darker is scarier, but if it gets too dark, people will be tripping and hurting themselves as they walk up to your house. You can use white holiday lights to keep your guests safe as they approach your door.
- Keep your pets away from trick-or-treaters. Even well-behaved animals can react oddly when they are exposed a lot of new people, especially when they are dressed in costumes and shouting "boo!" abruptly. Take the safe route and keep your pets away from the scary festivities.
